Alexandra is the younger sister of Ryan Hunter-Reay which the two are close to each other in terms of a brother/sister relationship. It was because of Ryan that Alexandra wanted to become a race car driver.

Formula 1 Career

After racing in races in the Texas area since she was six years old, Alexandra had made her debut in Formula 1 when she was eighteen years old in 2005. In the 2005 season, Alexandra went on to win ten races: Foster's Australian Grand Prix in Australia, Gulf Air Bahrian Grand Prix in Baharian, Gran Permio Foster's di San Marino in Italy, Grand Prix de Monaco in Monaco, Grand Prix du Canada in Quebec, Canada, United States Grand Prix in Indiana, Grand Prix de France in France, Grand Prêmio do Brasil in Brazil, Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix in Japan and Sinope Chinese Grand Prix in China. Alex went on to win the championship for that year.

Alexandra continued to be in Formula 1 between 2006-2009, winning a combined total of thirty one races and won championships from 2006 to 2009, making her win five championships in a row. For the 2010 season, Alexandra won three races in the season and placed third in the points behind second place Sebastian Vettel and championship winner Stephanie Franchitti

IndyCar Career

Alexandra made her IZOD IndyCar debut in the 2011 season where she won four races in the season including the season opener in St. Petersburg. She was a part of the 15-car pile up that took place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Alexandra only suffered a dislocated ring finger on her right hand. Alexandra finished third in the championship points standings behind Will Power (who finished second) and the championship winner Dario Franchitti.

At the 2012 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Alabama and Long Beach, Alexandra had finished second in those races. She'd started sixth, for the Grand Prix of Alabama, Alexandra started third and at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, Alexandra started fourth. Alexandra qualified second and she finished second. Alexandra is set to start on the outside of row 2 at the 2012 Indy 500 in sixth where she would be alongside Marco Andretti and Will Power.
